Pets

World Rabies Day – Monday 28th September is a useful opportunity to remind clients about the importance of rabies vaccination, particularly those planning to travel abroad with their dogs or cats this autumn. PDSA provide helpful information about rabies in dogs, while the GOV.UK website provides official information about rabies vaccinations and boosters for pet travel.

International Rabbit Day – Saturday 26th September provides a great opportunity to highlight the needs of our often-overlooked rabbit companions. The RSPCA provide useful advice on keeping rabbits healthy and happy.

Back-to-school routines and separation anxiety: As children return to school and households get back into their normal routines, some dogs may find themselves spending more time alone. Blue Cross provide practical advice on recognising and managing separation anxiety in dogs.

Autumn hazards: Autumn brings some seasonal hazards for pets, including acorns, conkers and fungi encountered on walks. PDSA provide useful advice on caring for pets during autumn, while Blue Cross explain why acorns can be harmful to dogs.

Equine

Equine influenza: There is currently increased equine influenza activity in the UK. Horse owners are being encouraged to remain vigilant and discuss vaccination schedules with their veterinary practice. You can read the latest information about the current equine influenza situation here.

Autumn grass and laminitis: As autumn approaches, changes in grass growth and pasture conditions can increase the risk of laminitis in susceptible horses. Blue Cross provide helpful advice on recognising, preventing and managing laminitis.

Farm Animals

Liver fluke: Cattle and sheep farmers are being encouraged to test for liver fluke this autumn, following a wet summer which may increase the risk of a higher-than-usual fluke season. COWS and SCOPS recommend testing rather than blanket treatment.

Bluetongue: An industry-led survey is looking at the impact of bluetongue in the UK during 2026. Farmers are encouraged to share their experiences to help improve understanding of the disease and its impact on livestock. Find out more about the survey here.

AI and laying hens: New research is exploring whether artificial intelligence could help identify early signs of welfare problems in laying hens. You can read more about the trial here.
