World Animal Day – Sunday 4th October: World Animal Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the animals in our lives and highlight the importance of responsible pet ownership and animal welfare. Halloween: Halloween can be an exciting time for families, but some of the associated treats, decorations and costumes can pose risks to pets. The PDSA provide useful advice on keeping pets safe during Halloween, including tips on keeping potentially harmful treats and decorations out of reach.
The National Animal Welfare Trust also provide helpful advice on keeping pets safe during autumn, including seasonal hazards to look out for as the weather changes.
Firework season: October is a good time to remind clients to start preparing pets for fireworks before Bonfire Night arrives. Dogs, cats, rabbits and other small pets can all become frightened by loud bangs and flashes. The RSPCA provide practical advice on keeping pets calm and safe during fireworks, while PDSA have a useful fireworks guide covering dogs, cats and small pets.
It is worth encouraging owners to prepare early by creating a safe place for their pet, making sure microchip details are up to date and speaking to their vet if their pet has previously shown signs of severe fireworks anxiety.
